On this day in 1978, boxer Muhammad Ali defeated Leon Spinks at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans. This fight earned him the world heavyweight boxing title for the third time in his career.  World Heavyweight Champion was a title that Mr. Float Like A Butterfly, Sting Like A Bee simply took back after losing to Leon Spinks 7 months prior on February 15, 1978 in a 15-round split decision. After Ali defeated Spinks and became the first fighter ever to win the heavyweight boxing title three times, he retired but only to return two years later to fight heavyweight champ Larry Holmes and Trevor Berbick. After losing to Trevor in December of 1981, Muhammad Ali left the ring for good with a record of 56 wins, 5 losses, and 37 knockouts. He died June 3, 2016.
