How To Take A Social Media Break Without Hurting Your Brand


We are all currently being fed the lie that we must be on social media day in and day out if we want to have a successful business or brand. Just about every new small business owner and entrepreneur has accepted the idea that it is okay to constantly take in information for the sake of possibly becoming successful, including the stuff that’s bullshit and/or doesn’t align with the journey. Not only is that fucking insane and detrimental to our overall health, it’s also not the brightest concept. We easily forget that if we experience something enough, it becomes a part of our subconscious and anything that is a part of the subconscious is a part of who we are. “Your subconscious mind works continuously, while you are awake, and while you are asleep” was in the book that I’ve been reading. I’d add, “and right after you log out.” Every single time you log into your social media profiles, you are having an experience. Whether that experience made you laugh, cry, or even reevaluate your beliefs toward something, that experience contributed to your thoughts in some way, big or small. When I was a senior in college, my criminology professor was very big on making sure that we learned the importance of mastering the ability to control our thoughts. “Control what enters your mind, but control what exits it as well, ” she’d say. If you’re constantly having experiences that do not confirm your plan of who you want to become and where you want to be then you will become anything else that has been confirmed in your subconscious through repetition. Yes, it gets that deep and if you think it doesn’t, this ain’t for you. The power of the mind is no secret; everyday someone is talking about how your life is ultimately just a reflection of the things you think about. With that being said, do you really believe that a social media break, for however long you feel is necessary, will only hurt you? The only time that statement is true is if the only work you’re doing is on social media. Ironically, I’ve been a lot more focused and productive since I’ve taken my hiatus from digital brand building about two weeks ago. I work twice as hard, think twice as much, come up with twice as many ideas, come up with plans that are twice as good, etc. You know why? Because I’ve tuned out the noise. At first I thought I’d be forgotten or left behind until I checked myself and remembered two things: 1. Nothing can stop where I am headed. 2. There is more to brand building than chatting with strangers and promoting on the internet. However, if you aren’t quite comfortable with taking a break yet, it might help to learn how to still have a presence without always being present.


Here Are 4 Ways To Take A Social Media Break Without Hurting Your Brand:

Make it known that you’re going on a hiatus.

You owe it to the people who support you to tell them that you won’t be producing content for a little while. It wouldn’t be the wisest thing to just go ghost and no one knows where the fuck you or the content they loved went.

Hire a social media manager.

Hire someone who doesn’t mind being on social media everyday, all day. You’ll still be pushing out content consistently and engaging with your audience. It’ll be like you never left…sorta. If you can’t afford to pay someone to run your social media platforms, you can hire an intern here!

Post content from third parties.

You can use sites like Buffer, HootSuite, Crowdfire, etc. to schedule content for your social media profiles without having to be social. The only downside about this is that you won’t be able to engage with your audience and everything will look automated on your profile. However, this is still a good method if you don’t plan on being gone for very long.

Don’t go on a hiatus on all of your platforms.

Different social media platforms offer different things. You might take a hiatus from Twitter because there’s a lot of “noise” and too much information to sort out but not from Snapchat where you enjoy seeing people do things in “real” time. Remaining social on one site even when you’re on a hiatus from the others will let people know that you’re still alive and still working, but that you really just needed a damn break.

There is absolutely not a single fucking thing wrong with disconnecting from people and if an “influencer” made you believe otherwise, you might want to reevaluate who you allow to influence you. In addition to my social media hiatus, I’ve ignored phone calls, texts, emails, etc. for a few days just so I could refocus. I knew that I wasn’t doing the amount of work needed to get to where I wanted to be and that I was too comfortable with what USED to be enough. I’ve reached a new level; therefore, it was time for me to tune out and tune in for the new answers. I’ve been finding the answers in books, Youtube, podcasts, and general research; I would have otherwise been looking for them on my timeline. I don’t feel bad, guilty, or behind – I feel hungry again. However, as a full time entrepreneur, that is always the best thing to be.

    Tweetdeck is also a great tool for scheduling posts. I have used mine since my last brand but thank you for this post I’m definitely going to make it active again!
