If someone told you that some people are just existing rather than living, it wouldn’t be the first time you heard that saying. There are people who do “everything right.” They get their diploma, get 1+ degrees then get a career that requires them to be at work at 9 in the morning and on their way home by 5:05. There are people whose entire life is routine and whose body clock reflects that. I call those people robots: people who have placed themselves so far in a box that they’ve become lifeless. They don’t create new memories because they don’t have time. They don’t spend time with the people in their lives because they don’t have time. They can’t spend any of the money they’re making because they don’t have time. They keep putting off the chance to live until 20 years have passed and they don’t have anything to show for it besides a bunch of kids, a list of regrets, and “divorced” as their relationship status on FB.
I pray that I don’t ever become someone who is just existing and whose greatest contribution to the world is paying taxes. The first way you can get more out of life is by:
Figuring out why you’re here in the first place: What is your purpose? Do you know? How can you figure it out if you’re so caught up in doing what society tells you you’re supposed to be doing? How can you find out why you were put here in the first place if you have never traveled the road less traveled? When’s the last time you let faith guide you rather than friends, family, or supervisors? Grow some balls!
No one ever completed their mission on earth by not taking risks. Finding out why you are still given permission to wake up everyday is the most guaranteed way to get the most out of your life. Finding your purpose, your passion, your destiny is the key to living rather than existing.
Doing what makes you happy: Cliché is an understatement but there’s a reason that clichés are clichés – everyone knows it’s true that’s why everyone keeps bringing it up! If you’re doing something that doesn’t make you happy, you are wasting your life. If you’re holding on to something that doesn’t make you happy, you are letting that something waste your life. Happiness is the most important thing in the world; it’s more important than money, friends, family, schools, careers, etc.
Demand more from life by only doing what makes you feel alive.
Learning to let go: the hardest thing I ever had to do was let go but the most fulfilling thing I’ve ever felt was weight being lifted off my shoulders when I did. You can’t get the most out of life if your mind and heart is crowded with things and people who don’t give a damn about your mind or your heart. You can’t get the most out of life when you are looking behind you on your entire journey. You can’t get the most out of life if you don’t make room for new blessings because you’re too busy holding on to the expired ones. Live your life and let go of anything that’s holding you back from doing that.
Putting yourself first: there is going to be a time or two…or ten when you have to be selfish. You have to be selfish with your energy, time, heart, mind, body, money, and space in order to protect yourself. You have to know when it’s time to make sure you’re good before anyone else because what good would you be to anyone if you’re not good on your own, anyway? It’s important that you know it’s okay to be selfish because everyone doesn’t deserve what you have to offer – some people just want the bragging rights. If you want to reach your highest potential emotionally, physically, spiritually, and mentally then know when it’s time to put yourself first.
Getting out of that sad excuse for a relationship that you’re in: the person you’re holding on to stopped making you happy a long time ago. Why are you still putting them first? At this point, is it even still a relationship or are you just in a “complicated situation?” Believe me, it took me years to let go of my first love mentally and emotionally but it was necessary if I wanted to be happy with anyone else. Toxic relationships take a toll on you and they’re super heavy. You’re drinking more, smoking more, got a few grey hairs, gaining or losing weight, always have an attitude, but you still got baé though. No! There is someone who’s willing to love you as soon as you love yourself enough to let go of the one who isn’t.
Making money doing what you love: the easiest money you’ll ever make is when someone pays you to do the very thing that you would still do for free if you had to. When I got my first check from writing, I knew I would probably never go back to working for someone else. You mean to tell me all I have to do is what I do at home everyday and you’re going to pay me?! That was music to my ears. Everyone has a purpose. It’s important to find out what it is or at least something you like and you’re good at so you don’t ever have to work another day in your life.
because that’s all having a 9-5 means. Put more time, energy, and money into your own passion and people will pay you to live the life you dream of and if that’s not a sure way to say you’re actually living then it’s time to go back to the drawing board.
