When the Black Lives Matter movement was created, I would have never thought in a million years a black person would ever say, “Nope. Actually, ALL lives matter.” But then there’s black people like Stacey Dash and Kevin Gates. Christina, also known as The Awkward Activist, made it very clear that she wasn’t fond of either of them. She wrote a post entitled, Kevin Gates You’re Belligerent: Black Lives Do Matter and she didn’t hold back any punches when letting Kevin Gates know how damn dumb he sounds telling interviewers about a situation where he “deserved” to be arrested because he was acting like an “ignorant belligerent nigger” as if that word wasn’t created to belittle, oppress, and disrespect the black community as a whole. As if even black people who say “nigga” don’t gasp when you put the strong “r” at the end. I have to agree with Christina, Kevin Gates. You aren’t a belligerent nigger but I can’t say you’re not ignorant.
The Awkward Activist then went on to explain how Kevin Gates saying “all lives matter” reveals his perception on the Black Lives Matter movement. His perception is problematic for a few reasons:
- It gives off the impression that the BLM movement was started to say all police officers are bad.
- It sends a message that anything that goes against what’s mainstream or widely acceptable by society is wrong.
- It takes the focus off the real events that occurred that led to the BLM movement in the first place – killing an unarmed black teen.
While it should go without saying that all lives matter, people still feel the need to put their hands over our mouths and yell it over our black lives matter chants, which takes away from the fact that they forgot to include black lives. For the black people who choose to say “all lives matter” instead of focusing on their own life and the lives of the people who look like them, I get it. You don’t want to cause too much commotion. You don’t want to ruffle the feathers of massa. You don’t want to look like you’re unappreciative of everything he’s given you (el oh el). But at least take pride in your own life. Because you, too, are black and no matter how much they pay you, you have never been the exception.
